Hulbert shows some true Yorkshire grit

Mac Hulbert continued his strong run in R4D by scooping FTD at the inaugural VSCC Harewood hillclimb. His 68.29sec ascent of the Yorkshire venue came just two months after his pre-war record-breaking exploits at Shelsley — and again confirmed him as the club’s current pacesetter.

Practice times confirmed that the FTD was really a two-way contest between Hulbert and James Baxter’s Alvis-engined Frazer Nash singleseater. In fact, Baxter edged R4D in the morning, but when it mattered Hulbert upped his game on his first run, wailing the ERA spectacularly through the claustrophobic farmyard section. Undeterred, Baxter pushed very hard and was only a quarter of a second slower.

Another mighty performance from Brian White (Frazer Nash TT Replica-BMW) saw him win the sportscar class with a time just outside the 70sec mark. The event was a chain-drive extravaganza — Trevor John’s AC/GN Cognac topping the vintage times.

Michael Windsor-Price headed a good Edwardian field in his fabulous Mercer Raceabout.

The club’s move to Harewood was rewarded with an entry of over 110 cars spanning 16 classes, and the success of the event points towards a permanent slot in the calendar.
