Record crowds flock to Goodwood

This year’s Goodwood Revival was the most popular yet: 94,000 people made the pilgrimage to the Sussex track over the three days — 13,000 more than in 2002.

Of these, 20,000 attended on the Friday, 32,000 on Saturday and 42,000 on Sunday.

When combined with the 158,000 spectators who thronged the Festival of Speed in July, more than a quarter of a million motorsport fans passed through Goodwood’s gates this year.

“This Revival was, I think, the best yet,” said Lord March, the event’s creator. “There was a magical atmosphere created by so many great drivers and riders — and, of course, by all the spectators who dress up so well for the occasion.

“Our thoughts are with Rupert Avon (see story below), but otherwise it was a wonderful occasion with some terrific racing.

“Above all, I hope that we gave the crowd an entertaining weekend both on and off the track.”

Suggestions that future events — the Festival in particular — might be made all-ticket affairs in an effort to prevent overcrowding were played down by officials.

“I’ve not heard of that,” said one.
