Goodwood stars-n-cripes

Two ex-Ferrari Formula One drivers had a fraught time at the Goodwood Revival.

Gerhard Berger, who had two spells with the Maranello marque, was down to race the Earl of March’s Ford Galaxie and Nick Mason’s 250GTO. However, he declined to drive the big Ford, saying that he preferred cars with brakes and steering (!), and the Ferrari broke down before his scheduled stint in the one-hour TT Celebration race.

At least Phil Hill got to race his car — the sensational ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Alfa Romeo 3000CM coupé.

The American qualified 11th for the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, and had risen to seventh place by lap five. At this point, however, a water hose blew off and Hill was a passenger as the Alfa spun wildly on its own coolant.

It looked briefly as though it might roll over, but the gravel trap on the fast approach to the Woodcote right-hander did its job well and the car came to rest without hitting anything.
