Seasoned British racer Mike Whatley secured the Thoroughbred Grand Prix title at Magny-Cours at the start of September.

Whatley, who combines chairmanship of the 750 Motor Club with racing his Ensign N175, cannot now be caught in the points standings, with one race remaining at Estoril in October.

He grabbed the crown with another class win in France, finishing half-a-minute clear of his nearest challenger. It was not, however, an easy weekend for the Yorkshire racer, as qualifying dramas forced an overnight engine change.

Clutch failure in the race cost Fredy Kumschick any chance of the title in his Williams FW07C and he will now go head to head with Steve Hartley (Arrows A6) at Estoril for the runner-up spot.
