Gordon Bennett centenary planned

The 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup will be commemorated by a special three-day event in Ireland next spring.

The event on May 31-June 2 will include two sprints for a wide variety of famous cars from Ireland’s motorsport past, and a run for Gordon Bennett cars over the original 75-mile route, albeit under a police escort.

The 1903 Cup should have been held in Britain in the wake of SF Edge’s victory in the previous year’s event. But with no possibility of closing roads on the mainland, the race was hosted by Ireland instead.
