Formula One stars celebrate at Revival

Damon Hill drove a 1962 BRM P578 at Goodwood to lead a special tribute to his late father.

The Revival Meeting celebrated the 40th anniversary of Graham’s first Formula One victory, scored in the 1962 Glover Trophy at Goodwood at the start of his world championship-winning season.

After a handful of laps in the car, Damon confirmed his admiration for the drivers of the era.

“You are very aware of how fragile the car is,” he admitted. “It’s also very hot and smells of petrol.”

More than 30 cars joined the track parade, including a trio of Lotus 49s and a host of sportscars from throughout Graham’s career. Jochen Mass drove a Porsche 718 and Duncan Dayton piloted a Lotus 16, while Graham’s early races were marked by a Cooper Mk8, a Kieft CK52 and a Speedwell Austin A35.

A host of famous drivers joined in the celebration, including Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Stirling Moss and Henri Pescarolo, who shared in a Matra Le Mans success with Hill. Keith Duckworth, the creator of the DFV, was also present.

Elsewhere during the fifth circuit revival meeting, David Coulthard demonstrated a Mercedes W196. The Scot had asked for a chance to drive during the Goodwood event and handled the car in which Juan Fangio won the 1955 Belgian Grand Prix.

This year’s event also held particular significance for Derek Bell, who scored his first victory at Goodwood since 1966, the year the track closed. Bell shared the St Mary’s Trophy-winning ex-Coombs Jaguar MkI with Grant Williams.

Bell then promptly jumped into David Cooke’s Cooper T51-Maserati to finish third in the Richmond and Gordon Trophies race.

BAR’s official F1 test driver Darren Manning won the Whitsun Trophy at the wheel of a Ford GT40.
