I must take issue with the selective memory of reader Mr Blegvad (September letters). As I recall nobody accepted Nigel Mansell’s swerve in front of Alain Prost as the height of good sportsmanship, indeed he attracted a large amount of criticism for his behaviour. The excuse offered for his swerve of “wheelspin” convinced nobody, but then we were used to economy of truth by then. After all, this was a driver helping his team-mate!

The start was described in Autocourse as a ‘carve-up’ — hardly complimentary.

There was a lack of sympathy for Frost at this time (a fact your correspondent conveniently overlooks) as he was perceived by all his rivals to be overly political and difficult to deal with. Exactly the same as Schumacher suffers at the moment.

As a final comment I wish to take issue with the remark, ‘It was a foul committed by an Englishman on a Frenchman, so nobody minded.’ I minded.

Mr Blegvad does not speak for the entire English race.
