Sir,

As the author of Racing the Silver Arrows I wish I could help David Jones (September letters) regarding the 1939 European Championship, but I can’t add very much.

I wrote that Hermann Lang won the tide that year, but I must admit that HP Muller had a very good claim. However, after all these years, I cannot remember just where I found my information, which was already acknowledged as correct.

Muller died in 1975, almost 10 years before I began my research, but I was able to interview several people who were with Auto Union at the time, including Professor Eberan-Eberhorst, Ghislaine Kaes (Professor Ferdinand Porsche’s secretary); Dr Ferry Porsche and Miiller’s teammate, Schorsch Meier. None of them even mentioned Muller as champion that year and I never had any indication from anyone that he had been somehow deprived of the title.

Everyone I spoke with, from both Auto Union and Mercedes, acknowledged Lang as the champion, he himself telling me, “The championship was mine without question.”

I AM YOURS, ETC,

Chris Nixon, East Twickenham, Middlesex
