Clark fastest and flawless

Sir,

Thank you for the great article ‘Uncrowned Duels’ in the August issue. I especially appreciate the strong case made forJim Clark. For my money, his dominance of the 1.5-litre era showed him to be a driver of unrivalled skill.

The cars did not have a lot of horsepower and required tremendous finesse to drive really quickly. In Dan Gurney, Graham Hill and John Surtees, Clark faced a trio of supremely determined and talented rivals.

Gurney’s Brabham, Hill’s BRM, Surtees’ Ferrari and Clark’s Lotus were about as equal as Formula One cars get. Yet, week after week, on slow circuits and fast, in sunshine and rain, Clark was consistently fastest, consistently flawless. And a gentleman to boot.
