Donington sets Berridge up for third TGP title

Bob Berridge (Williams FW08) won a titanic pole position struggle with Martin Stretton (Tyrrell P34) by 0.093s when the Thoroughbred Grand Prix Car series returned to Donington, his 1m03sec lap the quickest in its five-year history.

Sadly the race between the championship protagonists ended at the first corner, however, when Stretton was eliminated in a spectacular incident with Folch’s Lotus 91. With the 1995 champion missing the last three races, due to budget constraints, Berridge’s third title looks assured.

Folch claimed second, ahead of Trevor Reeves, whose brilliant class B-winning run in Roger Earl’s Tyrrell 008 came after a major suspension failure wiped out a rear corner in testing two days earlier. Steve Flitchins (Lotus 91), Richard Eyre (Williams FW07B) and Mike Whatley (Ensign N175) completed the top six.
