THE RT HON Peter Walker, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, opened Cosworth Casting’s new foundry at Worcester on September 10th. Cosworth’s unique casting process ensures almost perfect integrity of the finished casting. Molten aluminium, in a sealed, oxygen-free, environment is pumped upwards into sand moulds, rather than poured into moulds with subsequent oxidisation of the metal. The foundry has a total annual capacity of 60,000 castings, with two shifts operating. At present production is concentrated on the 16 valve cylinder head of the Mercedes Benz 190 2.3-16 and production of this unit will eventually rise to 7.000 a year. Even more interesting, though, is the news that in the pipe-line, the Company have a number of similar projects for major manufacturers who, like Mercedes Benz, wish to offer a top-of-the-range high performance engine. Cosworth may currently be out of Grand Prix racing but it seems that quite a number of us will be Cosworth drivers in the future.
