I was surprised to learn of R. 0. Shuttleworth’s love for a Jowett. A not-so-young lady of my acquaintance always referred to them as “bloody Jowetts”, as they tended to impede the progress of faster ears.

With respect, your photograph is of Stevenage, a little town then unaware of its Unpending fate under the post-war New Towns Act. The HRG was turning off the main road opposite an old-fashioned grocer’s shop whose full title, A. Males, does not appear on the photograph. Also • just off your photograph on the right was the Cromwell Hotel, often a gathering-place for motor-minded young men. I believe it is all quite different now.

Someone in Wales is anxious to discover the origins and history of his vintage motorcycle, known as “The Vitt”. which has a 90 mm. x90 mm. (565 c.c.) single-cylinder engine, with push-rod-operated vertical o.h. valves, probably dating from about 1910.0 two-speed foot-change Jardine gearbox. a slim petrol tank with a drop rear-end, slung beneath the frame top-tube, and belt-drive, although this may have been converted from chain-drive. It seems possible that this is a home-assembled machine, built for competition work.
