The Sex of Hub Nuts

display_0957d51541

With reference to the question put by Mr. K. Bearpark in the July issue, it all depends on sex! No, Gentlemen, not that kind of sex, but the sex of the knock-on hub nuts. On an MG which has ordinary wire wheels the hub nut is a female one, i.e. the wheel fits inside the nut. In the ease of Lotus Man which has centre lock steel wheels, the hub nut is a male one, i.e., the nut fits inside the wheel. Therefore the rule is for ordinary wire wheels the l.h. side of the car should have r.h. threads and r.h. side of the car should have left hand threads. If your car has a male cone hub nut the reverse is the case.

A lot of trouble was encountered when GT 40s which left the factory with ordinary Borrani wire wheels with female hub nuts were changed to cast alloy wheels with male hub nuts. The wheels came off until someone had the brilliant idea of changing the hubs over left to right, If anyone is interested in the subject as to why this happens I can send them a photocopy of a written explanation too long to reproduce here.
