Quiz-Picture Solution

Last month we expected to baffle a lot of readers with the quiz picture, but although fewer solutions than usual were received, indicating that it was a difficult picture, it is pleasing to record that some did “hit the bull’s-eye” indicating a very good knowledge of motor-racing history. The car is a Marendaz-Special, seen during the 1936 sports-car French G.P. at Montlhèry, where it was driven by Lord Howe. The first all correct solution received came from H. D. S. Venables, of Kingston Hill. Other correct solutions were received from D. Phillips of Burford, Joan Hawkins of Richmond, Surrey and Flt-Lieut. Peter Hull of Oakington. Incorrect solutions referred to S.S., 3 1/4 – litre Bentley and 6-litre Bentley (of which there “ain’t no such animal”), etc. One reader got Marendaz as correct, but mistook the driver for Stirling Moss’ mother, who used to drive a car of this make in rallies and trials.
