‘Sir.

In last month’s MOTOR SPORT I read with surprise and .see with wonder not unmixed with a certain disgust the in fact hysterical nnd, if I may observe sycophantic German reporting and rather unnecessary stressing of that unpleasant language and (in my experience) quite alien trend shown by the emphasis laid upon Teutonic things and Germanic ideas. Have we nothing English to put forward ? . . . have we forgotten

the fact that these alien men whom you ” boost ” so loudly developed their machinery by means of huge Government finances and a (to my mind) most undesirable ambition to conquer the world ? . . . have you no pride in British things and our British language ?

why have we to be sold a pro-German issue of your very (otherwise) good journal ? . .. Britain can show clean hands in the world : Can we not exclude the unclean from our publications ? I am, Yours, etc.,

Weybridge. J. GRANVILLE GRENFELL, M.S.A.E. (Late R.N.A.S., 1914/18)

[It is indeed true that even if you can please most of the customers most of the time, you cannot please all the customers all the time. This correspondent cannot be one of our serious readers, because he addressed his letter to another office altogether, and it had to be forwarded on to us. In publishing an article on German cars we are in line with other English motoring journals and we do claim that we were not biased in favour of the so-called ” unclean ” vehicles, which we tried to compare on a price and (when known) a performance basis with equivalent British products.—En.]
