Rally review, February 1973
To stud, or not to stud IT'S AMAZING how unfailingly the Monte Carlo Rally seems to cause a controversy year by year. Perhaps that statement is really unfair, for we…
Sir,
I am astonished at your remarks concerning the performances of pre-war winning Bugattis at Le Mans and the winning Jaguar this year. It must be almost impossible to make
a comparison when the Le Mans circuit has in 1951 been made immeasurably faster through widening, resurfacing and the elimination of corners. The 1939 57C Bugatti had the long
wheelbase, 10 ft. 10 in. chassis which could not have been ideal for a road race, yet it had to be used as the competition chassis had been discontinued. The 1989 Bugatti was a lone entry as compared with a team of three Jaguars in 1951, and had to be driven accordingly. I am, Yours, etc.,
