THAT GRAEF AND SIFT

Sir,

It is a pity that Mr. MeGildowny has noticed the umlaut on the Gr5f of Griif und Stift, and has therefore decided that the word cannot mean “Count,” because whereas dos Stiff does mean “monastery,” etc., as Mr. Scott.Moncrieff suggests, der Stiff means a “rivet,” or colloquially, a “little man,” and “Count and little man ” would have provided a delightful parallel to de Dion Bouton, as anyone will realise who is familiar with photographs of the Comte de Dion and Monsieur Bouton together in the early days of that firm. I am, Yours, etc.,

” BALADEUR.”
