THE VINTAGE SPORTS CAR CLUB

The Vintage Sports Car Club Speed Trials on 1. /ctober 10th were held at 1 t t lcstone-on -Sea , Kent. The course was over a half-Mile of concrete road running parallel with the sea, and 18 feet

About fifty cars were entered, including a number from the Bugatti Owners’ Club, C IT.A.C., and Frazer-Nash Car Club, which were invited, but there was a considerable number of non-starters, including G. B. C. Sumner’s 10i-litre Delage.

P,ven so, now that dusk falls so early, it was only possible to have one run in each class.

A high cross wind blew across the course from the Sea, which made the faster cars difficult to hold, especially the very rapid Bugattis of Messrs. Bainton, Baron and Lemon Burton, the ” Spook,” driven by G. Griffiths and R. A. C. Sumner’s Sumner J .A.P. The last two, incidentally, would have undoubtedly have made faster times had they not been beset by various disafTeetions in the transmission arrangements. Lemon Burton made fastest time of the day in the amazing time (having regard to the wind) of 23f seconds, which is better than he did at Brighton. It is equal to an average of 77 m.p.h., and he must have crossed the line at more than

125 m.p.h. A. Baron’s blown Brescia was also most praiseworthy, in making the fastest vintage time of 25i seconds.

There was no pre-war class on this occasion, as so many of the veterans are already in pieces for their winter overhaul.

The next event of the club is-a restricted invitation reliability trial to be held in the Cotswold country on November 29th.

The secretary of the club is Mr. E. T. Lewis, 31, kusland Road, Harrow, Middlesex.
