THE LEWES SPEED T IALS.

THE KENT AND SUSSEX L.C.C. FINISH A SUCCESSFUL SEASON ON THE RACE HILL, LEWES: R. G. J. NASH MAKES FASTEST TIME. THE fact that there was a Brooklands Meeting on the

same day no doubt affected the entry list of the Kent and Sussex Light Car Club’s Speed Trials on the Race Hill, Lewes. In spite of the absence of a few regular competitors, such cars as the one-and-only FrazerNash ” Terror ” and J. L. Burton’s very fast 1i litre Bugatti, ensured a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s sport.

As usual, the event was run off with the smooth regularity which always characterises these meetings. Beginning with the touring cars, an outstandingly good show was put up by F. 0. Penfold, driving R. G. J. Nash’s Ford V Eight coupe with a time of 332/5 secs. Several Wolseley Hornets then swept quietly up the course, all recording excellent times, the winner of the class being A. E. S. Curtis, time 36 seconds.

The following classes produced a certain amount of duplication, so that for some time we were entertained by the constant reappearance of Driskell’s blue B.N.C. and Miss Weekes’ white Salmson, honours going to the latter, whose best time was 34 seconds. This speed was quickly eclipsed, however, by S. E. Cummings’ greatly lowered Frazer Nash. This car made many runs up the course, thereby winning no less than four classes. Then came a taste of real speed when J. V. Bolster charged up the road on his fearsome Bolster Special. The car has been lengthened slightly

since its last appearance, a process which has materially reduced the vehicle’s inclination to lurch suddenly towards the side of the road. After a tense wrestling match, in which we are glad to say the driver

came off best, the car crossed the finishing line in the excellent time of 26 2/5 seconds. Fraternal rivalry was provided by R. V. C. Bolster, on an ancient, but mettlesome, G.N. chassis. We re peat “on,” for of body there was none. In spite of this deficiency, or

maybe because of it, the car made a really splendid second run, with a time of 27 4/5 seconds. Capt. J. C. Davis’s Delage, a regular habitue of the Lewes Speed Trials, was not in good form, nor

was Miler’s old Aston Martin, but a wonderful run was made by J. L. Burton’s 1 litre Bugatti, which got remarkably near “The Terror’s” record of 20 seconds with a run in 21 1/5 seconds. Interest was aroused by Nash failing to beat this time on his first run, but in the fol

lowing class the ” Terror ” roared up the third of a mile stretch of road in 21 seconds dead, a time which it repeated later in the afternoon.

The Bolster Special improved on its previous time by 1/5th of a second, but Burton never got up to his previous standard.
