Nick Heidfeld was due to return to Formula 1 action at the Singapore Grand Prix after Motor Sport closed for press, replacing Pedro de la Rosa as team-mate to impressive rookie Kamui Kobayashi.

Heidfeld started this season as Mercedes’ third driver but was not given a chance to drive the silver car, even in pre-season testing. He thus left the team to take up an opportunity as Pirelli’s test driver, using a 2009 Toyota chassis (above).

But just a few weeks into his new role he took the chance to return to Sauber, for whom he drove in 2001-03 and again under BMW ownership in 2006-09.

Heidfeld’s CV includes eight second places and a pole position.
