The English Model T Ford
A Century of the Model T in Britain
By Martin Riley, Bruce Lilleker and Neil Tuckett
This one-model book about one of the most famous cars is a truly remarkable and welcome account of the Model T Ford sold here from 1908 to 1926, not forgetting its forebears of 1903-1908.
Taking six years to compile, the information included is quite phenomenal. Technical advances both major and minute are described year by year and there is data about sales here of the nine private car types; the list of dealers occupies six of the 303 A4-size pages. There are descriptions of the Ford personnel involved, Fords at Brooklands (Henry Ford at one meeting) and in major trials, and a recall of the Ben Nevis climbs. But this covers only a small part of this enjoyable book, enhanced by more than 250 nostalgic pictures of the T in its every form, and 16 excellent colour plates. I suggest that whether you own a T, used to own one, or simply find them fascinating, this will be an essential treat. Private, commercial and military Ts, and the British factories at Trafford Park, Manchester and Dagenham are part of it. The book should appeal also to non-motoring historians who need to include “The Car of the Century” in their work, and to American readers who want to know more about the odd but loveable T. Published by the Model T Ford Register of GB, Edale, Derbyshire, £29.00, ISBN 978 0956011800.
