Aïello retires from racing

Laurent Aïello, arguably the greatest driver of the Super Touring era, has announced his retirement from race driving — at the age of 36.

The Frenchman won tin-top titles in France in 1994, Germany in ’97 (both with Peugeot) and Britain in ’99 (with Nissan ) before switching to the DTM. He won that crown with the privateer Abt Sportsline Audi team in 2002.

He also won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1998, when he shared a Porsche with Stéphane Ortelli and Allan McNish.

Aiello has had an unsuccessful time since joining the Opel DTM team, and admitted he is “tired of competition”.
