Racers that are going, going, gone

Star of the Coys Spirit of Motoring sale on September 30 was the ex-works 1983 Lancia-Ferrari Tipo LC2 Group C (above) which sold for an impressive £236,438, including commission. With up to 950bhp at full boost, it was driven by Patrese, Nannini, Alboreto, Ghinzani and Fabi. It has spent much of its life in a Japanese collection.

At the same sale, the ex-Ian Raby Gilby-Climax sold for £59,873. Completed in 1960 and raced by Keith Greene the following year, his best result a third in the ’62 Naples GP, by which time it had a BRM V8. Brighton car dealer Raby campaigned it in ’63 and matched Greene’s best with a third place in the Rome GP at Vallelunga. The car has been restored by Peter Denty.

Several cars failed to sell at Coys, including the ex-Phil Scragg 1971 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Group 4 Daytona, the ex-Ken Richardson ’57 Triumph TR3A and the famous ’84 Kreepy Krauly-backed March-Porsche 84G.

Among the entries for the Christie’s Exceptional Motor Cars & Automobilia London sale on December 7 is the ex-René LeBegue/Kaye Don Ecourie Bleue 1936 Delahaye 135S. The car was campaigned extensively when new,including the ’36 Donington GP. It’s estimated to fetch £280-320,000.
