The famous Portuguese street circuit at Porto (Oporto) will be revived for historic racing if the current hopes and plans of the Clube Portugues Automoveis Antigos are realised.

The track, which twice hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix (1958 and ’60), could see the return of racing cars as early as July 2005.

The organisers have started discussions with the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association with a view to holding a revival meeting incorporating some of the original track.

Famed for including tramlines and a cobbled section within its daunting 4.65 miles, the track was regarded as a real challenge. Stirling Moss won for Vanwall in 1958 and Jack Brabham for Cooper in ’60, while its high-speed nature was demonstrated by the 112mph lap record set by John Surtees in a 2.5-litre Lotus 18.
