Barrie and Dodd burst out of the Mallory mist

A storming Historic Roadsports victory by Robert Barrie’s Porsche 911S was one of the highlights at a soaking wet HSCC Mallory Park. Utilising the Porsche’s grip on the treacherous track, Barrie defeated the challenge of Adam Ormandy (Elan) and Chris Burbury (TR5) to score a fine win.
Burbury scented a victory as he hunted Ormandy, but then found out just how slippery it was by spinning out of the Esses, rearranging the TR’s headlights as he skimmed the barriers. Now Barrie moved in on Ormandy and he edged bravely ahead with a move that started at Gerards and ended at the Hairpin.
Graeme Dodd was another one to master the conditions, taking a brace of Jaguar wins. His Historic Racing Saloon success only came after the flying Anglia of Dan Cox hit gearbox problems when pulling clear of Dodd’s twitching, snaking Mk2. “It was a done deal,” said Cox of the victory that had been taken from him. Les Ely hounded Dodd to the line in his BMW 2000, while Roger Godfrey thrilled the sodden fans by barrelling his Mini Cooper up to third after starting 18th!
Dodd later crushed the XK field in the gathering gloom, winning by more than a lap from Darren McWhirter.
A brave challenge from Stuart Tilley (Modus M1) in horrid conditions kept Simon Hadfield (Lola T330) pushing on in the Derek Bell Trophy, while Steve Worrad guided his Brabham BT30 — in wingless spec — to a Classic Racing Car win after rival Edwin Jowsey spun his BT28 on the exit of the Esses.
Jowsey later bounced back to win the Formula Junior race, but only after Simon Armer (Cooper T59) had spun away an increasing lead at Gerards. Jowsey had tried all ways to keep Armer behind, but the Cooper had squeezed ahead on the dash to the Hairpin.
Matthew Bannister and Charles Barter went wheel to wheel in a Datsun 240Z contest on the opening lap of the 1970s Road Sports, but after being side by side through the Esses, Bannister exerted control and kept his rival at arm’s length.
Finally, a subdued Formula Ford encounter went once more to Neil Fowler, this time aboard one of the team’s Merlyn Mk20 hire cars rather than his more usual Lola.
