Jolley racing weather

Rod Jolley revelled in the slippery conditions at Zandvoort, sliding his Cooper T45/51 to a clear win in a modestly supported HGPCA race at the Dutch venue. His charging style overcame the T53 of Don Thallon.

Although Thallon’s pace in the dry with his Tasman car was enough to claim pole, Jolley was peerless when Sunday’s race ran on a damp track. He shot ahead from the start and was able to fend off Thallon to take the victory by just over 4sec after more than 30min of racing.

Into third came Mark Griffiths after a fine performance in his Lotus 18. Unable to match the pace of the two Coopers, he still finished well clear of the 18/21 of Eric Staes. Wrapping up the top six were the Coopers of Bill Kirkpatrick and Martin Eyre.

The severe noise restrictions kept the field down to 16, covering everything from the 1926 Amilcar of Paul Grant to the front-running Coopers. The race’s only non-starter was Rainer Ott, whose ERA AJM1 has suffered a gearbox failed.
