Fan of the future
Sir,
I have recently returned from the Goodwood Revival Meeting, which I visited with my seven-year-old son Alex. It was his first visit to the event.
He is what I imagine the future fan of motorsport to be, and (please pay attention Mr Ecclestone) the competitive racing of the historic racing cars has won him over.
Until now a fan of a certain M Schumacher et a!, he most definitely now has ‘Whizzo’ Williams as his hero following that superb drive in Norman Grimshaw’s Morris, closely followed by Sir Stirling Moss and Barry Sheene.
The pleasure that I got from seeing him jumping up and down alongside the Lavant Straight, exhorting Sheene to go that little bit faster, will remain with me for a very long time, as will his look of delight when offered a seat in 0l’ Yeller.
Even now he is planning what he can wear for next year’s Revival, as he felt he really wasn’t entering into the spirit of the event in his short-sleeved shirt and chinos.
What is more, he wants his younger brother Christopher, aged four, to be with us next year to experience the spectacle first-hand.
I am, Yours etc,
Jonathan Rooke, Gloucester
