I read the comments that Simon Taylor made about BAR and their awful struggles in this, their first season. Fair enough, but I wonder if there is another reason. There seems to be a jinx on cars with three letter initial names.

ERA built up a fine reputation in voiturette racing, but when they moved into Grand Prix events, the E-type turned out to be a dud, and their later effort the G, even with Moss driving, was awful.

The next Berthon Raymond Mays vehicle is still as unreliable after all these years, and it took them quite a while to have a winner.

It was not just this country either; France had the CTA. Am I right in thinking that this is what Raymond Sommer is driving in the 100 Greatest Drivers list? He must have wondered what he had done to deserve having to be mixed up with two no-hopers.

The HWM also failed to make the jump. Later even those clever ex-Ferrari men, plus Alf Francis and an ex-World Champion couldn’t make a winner of the ATS. AAR didn’t last long, either.

I seem to remember an AGS and a RAM.
