Championship Fight

The Schumacher/Coulthard fracas recalls other such incidents, as when Alberto Ascati was shunted off by Onofre Marimon after he had spun on the last lap of the 1953 Italian GP, losing him the race.

Officials had to restrain both in the subsequent trackside confrontation. Fangio in his Maserati avoided this, and went on to win. Marimon was four laps in arrears, `covering’ for Fangio, hence Ascari’s anger.
