Sage History
It was with great interest that I read the article re the Sage engined cars.
In late 1925! saw a racing car in a field at Nazeing near my home, and having made inquiries as to the owner, called on a farmer who said it was now a plaything for the children. He said he had bought it with the rear-axle shaft broken and he had no idea where to get a replacement.
I said I would like to buy it and he accepted £7 for it. The car was registered for road use at Brighton and was called a Byrd Roberts (BP6942). It had separate cylinders, SO camshaft, Bosch magneto, twin Soles carbs, a cone clutch, and both gearbox and rear axle casing had stamped on them “MAB”. I discovered that these components were fitted to the Marlborough car and that T. B. Andre of Notting Hill Gate were agents. They supplied me with the last halfshaft they had, and, when fitted I ran the car for some years.
It was very smooth and sweet running beautifully made, and never gave a moment’s trouble. The car had no starter motor, lights nor weather equipment and was taxed only in the summer. I think that David Hooker & Co of Walthamstow, Aircraft Engineers, had something to do with the engine, besides Messrs Sage. I sold the car in 1941 and never, sadly, saw it again. Epping TORY BOWLES
