CIRCUIT OF ALBI (September 24th)

THE French Formula Two series finished with a 272.711-kilometre 75-lap race round the airfield circuit of the town of Albi, in the Midi of France, in very warm weather. Stewart in the latest MatraCosworth dominated the meeting, being fastest in practice and leading for most of the race. Rindt fought valiantly to keep up with the Scot, but when they lapped some slower cars the Winkelmann driver lost contact and Stewart forged ahead. Clark had a spin in the opening laps, which dropped his Lotus 48 to the back of the field, and in spite of an engine that was not running too well he worked his way back up to third place. The B.M.W. team of Hahne and Siffert were supported by de Adamieh driving the Team Surtees Lola-B.M.W., but all three cars were hopelessly outclassed on this fast, fiat circuit where the Cosworth-engined cars were reaching nearly i6o m.p.h. Beitoise in a works Matra-Cosworth was well up until his throttle control gave trouble, and Graham Hill retired with a broken engine, while Robin ‘Widdows was by far the fastest of the private owners, until he spun off, and Irwin and Redman drove good races to be only one lap behind Stewart at the end of the race.—D.
