A NEW THAMES MOTOR BOAT CLUB FOR THE “NOT SO WEALTHY”
AREALLY active motorboat club with its headquarters on the Thames, has been a long felt want, so it is with enthusiasm that we welcome The Junior Motor Boat Club.
In response to a general invitation, a crowd of keen young men and. women met at a Twickenham Hotel recently and decided that small power motor boats had not taken their proper place in the world, and that several million people were missing a lot of fun.
Among those present was Mr. Frank Marshall, who it will be remembered, made the first channel crossing with a 350 c.c. outboard, in company with Mr. Richard Cole, Barron Brooruhall, Britain’s amateur speed skating champion, Mr. Gunnar Marcus, a famous Swedish Archimedes exponent and lastly, Mr.
Richard Cole, who needs no introduction to “Motor Sport” readers.
In an incredibly short space of time a temporary committee of four was elected and a programme drawn up, which includes a dance in the near future, a sound film demonstration, also in the near future, and a lecture. The object of the Junior Motorboat Club is to make motorboating possible for the man or woman of limited means. Well equipped speed dinghys can be hired by members at the rate of 3/per hour for one person, 4/for two persons and 5/for three persons. It is necessary, however, to obtain a certificate of proficiency from the committee before being “let loose.” A course of “dual instruction “is therefore provided at a slightly higher rate. Also, members may store their own
craft at the rate of 1/6 per week in the Dock at Eel Pie Island, Twickenham, near which is the headquarters of the club.
There is every indication that the Junior Motor Boat Club is going to be a great success. We, ourselves, have done “a spot of dual” and it certainly is surprising how utterly different a speed boat is to a car. There seems to be a lot to learn about high speed navigation and it is a fascinating and thrilling study. The club subscription is 6/per quarter, which seems a very small sum, and there is no entrance fee.
