CAMPBELL’S DA.YTONA PROJECT

FOR some time it has been known in trade and motor racing circles that Captain Malcolm Campbell has been evolving plans for making an attack on the world’s land speed record at Daytona early next year. It is now revealed that the design of a new car for the purpose is already in hand, though details of its ‘construction are being kept secret for the time being. Captain Campbell is not only determined to set up a fresh record ; he intends, also, to make his visit to the U.S.A. a form of mission for ” pushing ” English cars, and for this purpose he proposes to get the co-operation of manufacturers, so that a number of demonstration models may be shipped with his special vehicle for display both at Daytona and other important centres in America. It is also proposed that important people associated with the British D

automobile industry shall accompany him.

An excellent feature of his project is that the British cars should be timed officially over the measured mile at Daytona by the A.A.A. so that a practical demonstration of the capabilities of English sports vehicles may he given.

Provided he gets the necessary support, Captain Campbell proposes to go to Canada and the Antipodes, after his U.S. visit, where he may quite possibly make further attempts on records with his new car. At the same time, demonstrations with the accompanying cars will be made in a similar way to that at Daytona. The new attempt will be all the more important as the Americans are extremely keen on securing the world’s record, for which purpose at least three special cars are now being prepared.
