The Monte Carlo Rally SOME NEW RULES

FROM to-day, November 1st, until December 24th, entries can be sent in for the popular Monte Carlo Rally, which is organised by the International Sporting Club of Monaco.

For the forthcoming Rally, new rules have been made, amongst them being one forbidding certain forms of advertising in relation to competing cars. Announcements, for example, as to the order of arrival at Monte Carlo or at any of the intermediate checks will not be allowed nor must any speeds which may have been attained in excess of the average allowed for the whole journey be advertised. THIRTEEN international class records were broken at Brooklands last month by S. C. H. Davis and C. Goodacre on the latter’s 500-miles’ Race Austin “Seven.” •

These were :-1, 3, 6, 6 and 12 hours at speeds of 84, 83, 83.45, 83.73, 81.71 m.p.h. respectively. The remaining records were for 50 kilos (83.58 m.p.h.), 100 kilos (84.56 m.p.h.), 200 kilos (85.07 m.p.h.), 500 kilos (83.82 m.p.h.), 1,000 kilos (82.80 m.p.h.), 50 miles (84.35 m.p.h.), 100 miles (84.94 m.p.h.), 200 miles (82.98 m.p.h.) and 500 miles (83.72 m.p.h.).

Before completing its record run, the Austin was driven for two hours in the darkness, the salient points on the track being marked by red lights.

Old-Timers’ Day

REGULATIONS have now been drawn up and issued by the Royal Automobile Club regarding the Emancipation Day Run for veteran cars from London to Brighton. The date fixed is November 23rd, and the ancients will be sent off from Henly’s Garage, Glasgow Terrace, Grosvenor Road, S.W.1. The route which they will take will be by way of Westminster Bridge, Kennington, Streatham, Reigate and Crawley, and the finish will be at the Aquarium Garage, Brighton. The cars will leave London between 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. and those which get to Brighton before 4 p.m. will be eligible for a special R.A.C. certificate. It may be remembered that in previous runs only those cars made before 1903 were qualified to participate ; the limit has now been raised to 1905, and in consequence, it is expected that a much bigger entry will be received. Mr. E. K. H. Karslake, whose articles are such a popular feature of MOTOR SPORT will probably take part in this interesting event on his 1903 De Dion Bouton. Intending entrants should note that their application forms must be sent to the R.A.C. offices not later than Monday, the 10th of this month. The entry fee is 5s.

acceleration and braking test. The Rally will be open to two classes of car :—light cars with engines not exceeding 1,100 c.c. (which must carry two people), and cars of more than 1,100 c.c. These must carry either four people or a driver and one passenger, with ballast. As in former years, the principal subject of award will be distance covered. The maximum number of points available for this will be 100, and for average speed 120 for the bigger cars, and 105 for small cars. The maximum and minimum average speeds allowed will be 24.85 m.p.h. and 19.8 m.p.h. Arrivals at Monte Carlo will come under the eyes of scrutineers, and battered wings, raucous exhaust notes, and faulty electrical equipment will entail a substantial subtraction of points. The entry fee is 200 francs per vehicle.
