Röhrl and Manthey star in respect the ’Ring video

It’s not often a music group gains the endorsement of motor-sporting legends, but both Walter Röhrl and Olaf Manthey have loaned their support to a new piece by soft-rock band the Heizer Monkeys promoting safer driving at the Nürburgring.

Before you go Googling, they’re not a mash-up of Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys tribute acts. Instead Heizer Monkeys is both a band and a race team – its organist is also Depeche Mode’s drummer, Christian Eigner.

The new track takes aim at the boy racers who plague the Nordschleife’s TF or Touristenfahrten driving days, often in souped-up hatchbacks. The band mocks such careless users, including the line: “I don’t fear the ’Ring, my Xbox taught me everything”.

Two-time WRC champion Röhrl plays a Yoda-like driving master, while Porsche hero Manthey is a marshal directing a ‘chosen one’ driver toward the Porsche 964 ‘Kermit’ that he won the first Porsche Supercup title in.
