Clark Rindt, Hulme and Stewart

May17 1964: possibly the finest selection of drivers ever to grace the Mallory Park paddock. Headline event was a round of the British F2 Championship: after jetting back from Indianapolis qualifying, Jim Clark arrived In time to qualify his Ron Harris Lotus among the leading group. On pole was young Austrian Jochen Rindt

But Rindt stalled at the start and, although Brian Hart bolted into an early lead, Clark and Peter Arundell worked through to take a Lotus1-2, while Rindt battled back to third in his Brabham. Among those he passed was another future World Champion, Denny Hulme.

In the F3 race, a young Jackie Stewart led home Tyrrell Cooper team-mate Warwick Banks. But Banks had already had a successful weekend in the previous day’s European Touring Car Championship race, he and John Rhodes had led home the sister Mini Cooper of John Fitzpatrick and Julien Vernaeve.

Straight after the F3 race, Stewart hopped into a Chequered Flag Lotus Elan to win the GT race from the similar Ian Walker-run car of Arundel!. Clark was also a double winner: before the F2 race he had rumbled his Lotus 30 to a win in the Sports Car thrash. Final winner of the weekend was Fitzpatrick, who won a Mini-dominated 1300cc Touring Cars race.
