My hero
By Derek Warwick
“When I went to racing circuits as a spectator I used to look at the people rather than the racing cars. The cars were boring to me; it was the people who made them what they were. That’s why I was always impressed by Jochen Rindt.
“He was everything I wanted to be – quick, intelligent and flamboyant. He took risks too. He motivated the people around him and I took something from that for my career. He was one of the boys, whether it was an Easter Monday Formula Two meeting or a grand prix. People like Rindt, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart were not just successful because they were good, they knew how to build teams around them.”
