Ayrton Senna (above) is killed in the San Marino GP at Imola. Karl Wendlinger is left in a coma after crashing in practice at Monaco. Accidents persuade the FIA to force through immediate rule changes for Spanish GP, to slow cars and improve safety.
1984
Alain Prost romps to victory in the San Marino GP as teammate Niki Lauda retires with engine failure. But Lauda hits back at Dijon two weeks later to claim the French GP (above). Patrick Tambay is second and Nigel Mansell third for Lotus.
1974
Emerson Fittipaldi’s McLaren beats Niki Lauda’s Ferrari to victory in the Belgian GP at Nivelles (above). At the Spa 1,000km, Derek Bell and Mike Hailwood in a Gulf GR7 push the victorious Matra of Jacky Ickx and Jean-Pierre Jarier all the way.
1954
Alberto Ascari wins the Mille Miglia for Lancia (above). Froilán González claims two major races in the space of a week. First his Ferrari wins the Bordeaux GP, then the International Trophy at Silverstone ahead of Prince Bira and Stirling Moss.
1929
Brooklands holds Britain’s inaugural 24-hour race (above), although its Double 12 is split into two parts.Giulio Ramponi’s Alfa beats the Bentley of Sammy Davis and Sir Ronald Gunter after a tight duel. The Alfa wins by 3.5 miles on handicap.
