Mount Stuart Classic cancelled

The Mount Stuart Motorsport Classic will go ahead in 2005 in spite of the cancellation of this year’s event, the organisers have vowed.

Event founder Johnny Dumfries, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1988, explained that a shortage of ferry capacity to the Isle of Bute, on which the Mount Stuart Classic takes place, was behind the decision. He has been assured that the situation will improve for 2005.

Dumfries said: “Regrettably, we’ve not been guaranteed the necessary level of support from the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry Company to satisfy the requirements of what will be an extremely busy weekend with an anticipated 15,000 visitors to the island. We had been making some fantastic progress in terms of attracting superb cars and drivers…”

The third running of the event was due to take place on July 31-August 1.
