Greene and pleasant land

Sir,

It was a very pleasant surprise to see the article on Keith Greene (April 2003). We lived in the same Essex village in the 1950s. My father had a small garage and engineering business, and I knew Keith just as he was starting to compete. He raced a road-legal Lotus XI and was kind enough to give me a short ride in it while I was still at school.

I watched Keith and his father compete in the Stapleford hill-climb in the ’50s. I remember him as a very pleasant person, always having time for a chat with mere mortals like us.

Keith was a few years older than me and we went our separate ways as one does in the heady days of youth, but I suppose it is partly due to Keith that I became interested in motorsport and now compete in hill-climbs in a Ginetta G17.
