U.S. stars set for Goodwood
One of the feature attractions at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will be the car which won the first Indianapolis 500 race, in 1911. The Marmon Wasp will make its first ever appearance outside the USA to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the race.
The Wasp, named for its black-andyellow colour scheme, was raced to victory by Ray Harroun and has spent many years in the Indianapolis Hall of Fame. Among the eight Champ-Cars being airfreighted in for the event will be the Brawner-Hawk in which Mario Andretti finished second in the 1965 Indy 500, and the Lola-Ford which took Al Unser Snr to second in ’67. Also present will be the prototype McLaren M16 ChampCar in which Mark Donohue led the 1971 race and which will run for the first time in 30 years.
Indy legends Bobby Unser, Bobby Rahal and Danny Sullivan will also be at the Festival run over July 6-8.
The event will also celebrate 100 years of Ford in motorsport and the 25th anniversary of James Hunt’s 1976 Formula One championship win.
