Jackie Stewart has been named as the president of the British Racing Drivers Club. He replaces Ken Tyrrell who has occupied the seat in a caretaker role since Lord Hesketh resigned last year over differences concerning the future of the club and its efforts to retain the British Grand Prix.

Stewart, 60, has been able to accept the role thanks to the time now available after stepping down as head of the Jaguar F1 team. His first priority will be to continue the fight to hang onto the GP which took a fresh turn recently when Donington’s name was thrown into the pot as a third possible venue, after Silverstone and Brands Hatch.
