Clever of Sotheby’s to have a sale devoted entirely to the effects of the early aviator S F Cody. In January they auctioned his clothes, pistols, art-work, posters, propellers, kites, aeroplane drawings, photographs and mascots, in 271 lots, even to walking sticks and Cody’s AA badge from his Simms car. Those into aero-engines may be surprised to know that a Green and a vee-eight ENV engine, circa 1909, were in the sale — estimated bids, up to £45,000 the two. Both on stands, as if from some museum.
