VSCC Light Car Welsh Rally

This enjoyable annual fixture took place this year on April 7/8 and was organised by Jane Arnold-Forster. The Welsh weather-gods behaved, and six driving tests on the Saturday were won by 17 year old H. Colledge in his Riley and nine trials hills on the Sunday were tackled in sunshine, the tiny Aero cleaning every trials section. Seymour Price had planned the trials route, which was ideally suited to the prevailing dry conditions, Caerfagu-2 especially sorting things out at a fearsome gradient or “wall of death” straight-up ascent. Many cars got almost to the summit here but only Seymour’s son Simon, in the family A7 Chummy, managed to score 20 points and it was left to Branislav Sudjic in the two-stroke Aero to get fractionally higher. Few casualties were noted among the large entry, but Roger Collings’ 1912 Brixia-Zust broke its gearbox on the hump leading into the Llwynbarried section and was towed home behind a Maestro. The majority of the entry comprised regular competitors but a “new” car was Warburton’s 1925 12/25 Star tourer, smartly finished in the blood orange and black colours of Lord Vivian of Bangor, although it once had a saloon body.
