I was interested to read of your visit to the Arctic Circle to enjoy the well-publicised virtues of SAAB motoring in sub-zero temperatures. I myself experienced similar conditions on a weekend visit to Shropshire in my SAAB 99GL during last December where the temperatures (according to the Meteorological Office) fell as low as –25 C. Unlike you, however, my SAAB froze solid after standing outside all night, having made an evening run down from London. Having had the au religiously (and exclusively) serviced by a SAAB franchised dealer during the four years of my ownership, I was very upset.

The SAAB service guide in this country quite specifically states that enough anti-freeze is to be added during a service in order to protect the cooling system from freezing down to a temperature of –27°C, and understandably I believed my car to be no protected.

RMS Motors of Acton, who have done the servicing, and SAAB (GB) have refused to accept any responsibility for the occurrence described above, and I am now left with bills of over £1,005 for repairing the damage caused by the freezing up of the cooling system.

It would seem that SAAB (GB) and their franchised dealers are trading on the standards of SAAB-Scania in Sweden — the parent company — whilst making little effort to live up to them. To add insult to injury the famed heated driver seat in my car has never worked since the day I got it! Brentford, MALCOLM R. WINROW Middlesex
