Brooklands in literature

Having expressed surprise last month that there should be a reference to the racing car “Chitty-Bang-Bang“ in a book about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I feel that I should now remark that Brooklands is mentioned in “Conan Doyle” by Pierre Nordon (John Murray, 1966). The reference is to Sir Arthur “. . . going round Brooklands racing track at 100 m.p.h. when he was seventy. . . .”. That would have been in 1929 and probably relates to a ride in the SSK Mercedes-Benz that his sons Dennis and Adrian Conan Doyle owned at the time. — W.B.
