Executive cars?

Sir,

I recently received your issue of February, 1977 from a friend in England. Although Motor Sport is good reading I was particularly distressed at your use of the word, executive, when applied to the new Rover 3500 pictured on page 137. What do you mean? Is this obviously superbly designed and engineered automobile to be strictly built for those few who are executives or does it execute previously unheard of tasks.

I have read in publications in this count, that the car will be imported to the USA as a Triumph in the $8,000 to $ 10,000 range. I’m sure the car will have a rarity value of more than that, as most Americans will never see one on the road. Such is the case with Jaguar’s “executive” XJS. I have yet to see one on the road in the Chicago area, although I know they exist as I saw one at the Chicago Motor Show of 976.

Don’t you and your readers think that the title of “executive” be dropped from such “highly desirable motor cars”?

It might be a good idea to make the cars not only desirable but acquirable too. That is to say build enough to go round, not just enough for the executives. Somebody may make some money then instead of just nice cars.
