FRENCHMAN Jacques Laffite (above) heads for victory in the first heat, his Schnitzer-BMW-engined Martini leading the March-Ford of Britain’s Brian Henton, the works March-BMW of Patrick Tambay, Vittorio Brambilla’s March-BMW, the Lola-Ford of Ted Wentz and the other works March of Michel Leclere. Wentz’s Lola, leading Leclere’s March (left) was third in the first heat: Patrick Tambay (right, leading Peterson) was second overall. A crash on lap 20 of the first heat eliminated five cars. Peterson (bottom left) was hit from behind by Hans Binder’s March and then Binder himself (bottom right) was hit by several other cars.
