Wedierby Grange Park Sir,
Your article on Hill-Climbs and SpeedTrials led me to look up some snapshots I took at one such meeting in the late 1930s I think, at Wetherby Grange Park in Yorkshire, one of the places you mention.
Not very exciting photographs I’m afraid, but I had only a simple camera at the time and being only an ordinary spectator, was not able to get very near the cars. They do however give a general picture of the scene and also the method a timing used. Wetherby Grange Park is much the same
now as it was pre-war although the mansion has I think been demolished. It is the venue for the annual agricultural show and occasional horse trial events, otherwise it is mainly used for grazing cattle and exercising race horses. Harrogate R. STAYMAN One of Mr. Stayman’s snapshots—so
redolent of the amateur enthusiasm of those days–is reproduced opposite. It is interesting to note how far back spectators were by now required to stand, compared to the “safety arrangements” at Lewes.—Ed.
