Mercedes-Benz 230SL
Announced at the Geneva Show, the new Mercedes-Benz 230SL, which replaces the 190SL, is fitted with a 6-cylinder engine derived from that of the 220SE. The size has been increased to 2.3-litres and the injection system now feeds into the intake duct on the cylinder head. With a compression ratio of 9.3:1 the engine develops 170 b.h.p. at 5,600 r.p.m. The chassis closely follows the design principles of the other 6-cylinder Mercedes but the front and rear track is wider. The swing axle rear suspension is retained and Girling disc brakes are fitted at the front in conjunction with Alfin drums at the rear. Speeds in the three upper gears of 56, 84 and 124 m.p.h. are claimed. The price in Britain is £3,414 2s., 1d.
Sunbeam Alpine G.T.
Two new versions of the Alpine were released at the Geneva Show, the roadster having a power increase to 87.75 b.h.p. at 5,200 r.p.m. together with higher indirect gear ratios, servo-assisted brakes, better seats, bigger boot, bigger fuel tank and adjustable steering wheel and pedals. The G.T. has a slightly less powerful engine (80 b.h.p. at 5,000 r.p.m.) but is given more sound insulation to make a quieter high-speed touring car. The tourer costs £840 and the G.T. £899, complete with hard-top.

A Mini for millionaires
The well-known coachbuilders, Harold Radford Ltd., who have previously been Rolls-Royce specialists, have recently introduced a much modified version of the Mini known as the Mini de Ville “Grande Luxe.” This pompous name covers a vast range of modifications such as leather seats, electric windows, wooden facia, lambswool carpets, two-tone paint job, etc., etc. This can be done only on a Mini-Cooper, presumably because the weight of extras would make the ordinary Mini too slow, and the complete car costs £1,088. Less luxurious conversions can be done for £223 and £87 10s., respectively.
